“WHEN NEAR ENOUGH IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH” How nurses and business can successfully collaborate and innovate

Peter Deliopoulos

General Manager, PDMedical Pty Ltd, Dandenong South, VIC, Australia

Introduction
This session will cover a case study of collaboration between the infection control nurses of St. Vincents Private Hospital Melbourne and PDMedical

Methods
In essence this is a story about nurses from infection control and a clinical advisor who were not prepared to accept the status quo nor current devices available to nurses. They pushed for innovation in order to protect their nurses from sharps injury, the trauma of uncertainty and the consequences of infection.

This session will present the development of the sharps caddy which has been accepted in hospital wards Australia wide. In the second part of the session we will cover the more recent development of the family of transfer trays for use in the operating theatre.

Results
The Sharps Caddy significantly reduced the rate of sharps injuries. The success in dealing with ward sharps safety has led to the quest to deal with sharps injuries in the operating theatre.

Conclusion
Through these examples I hope to encourage you to embrace innovation and collaboration and by so doing help improve the safety in hospitals and the wider health care sector.

As nurses in a changing and challenging environment, innovating may be the best way to achieve your safety and infection control objectives

If you need to look beyond the current norms and products, knowing that innovation is not only possible in Australia but it is also practical, may well help you achieve your goals.
